Belief, Lifestyle, and Outcome - How Fate Affects All Three

Sophocles in Oedipus the King tackled the different ways, Fate can affect life. Can one really outdo Fate and if so, does that condemn or exonerate us? In this paper I address 3 ways that I found Fate to impact Oedipus the King and what that shows about him as a person. If I was to do this project over again, I would probably look for more textual examples of how Oedipus’ faith journey was changed by Fate and how that affected his reign as King.

Hugo and Cicero -is Jean Valjean a Good Person?

With a character as complex as Hugo’s Jean Valjean from Les Miserables, Hugo challenges the societal norms of what it means to be a good person. In this paper, I use Cicero’s subdivisions of morality from his writing, On the Good life, in order to properly evaluate the status of Valjean’s morality. My biggest regret with this paper was not being able to explore textual quotes in the depth they deserved.

Aquinas and Bernard vs. The World - Loving others without God

Can non-Christians truly love each other? I attempt to answer this question using Aquinas’, Summa Theologica, as well as Bernard’s, On Loving God. I use Aquinas’ definitions and descriptions of Love to evaluate the difference between the many different forms of love from in Bernard’s writing. I admit this piece was difficult so if I was to redo this paper, I would definitely be more strict about which quotes I would use for reasoning
